There is no single test for EVALI; it’s what is known as a "diagnosis of exclusion," which means that a doctor will conduct tests to rule out other potential diseases and conditions. The primary risk factor for EVALI is current or previous use of a vaping device. They can look like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, pens, USB flash drives, or may be in other forms. Vaping involves using a device known as an e-cigarette—also called a vape pen, mod, or tank—to heat up a small amount of liquid, turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. Most vape liquids contain substances such as propylene glycol and glycerol as base ingredients that create the vapor.
Among adolescents who both vaped and smoked traditional cigarettes, a higher proportion in the This is Quitting program, about 51%, reported not vaping nor smoking at seven months, compared with 30% of the assessment-only group. Withdrawal from tobacco products can cause temporary congestion and respiratory discomfort as your lungs and airways begin to heal. Many e-cigarettes sold in the U.S. contain far more nicotine than e-cigarettes sold elsewhere, which increases the risk of addiction and harm to the developing brains of youth and young adults. Marketing tactics targeting young people have contributed to the rapid increase in use. The long-term risks of exclusive use of e-cigarettes are not fully known but evidence is accumulating that e-cigarette use has negative effects on the cardiovascular system and lungs.

I like the nicotine, but everything else about the experience is viscerally revolting. About 43% of the study participants were LGBTQ+ adolescents, for instance, and research suggests that LGBTQ+ young people smoke and vape at a higher prevalence than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. The new study included a diverse group of adolescents, indicating how the text message program could be helpful for marginalized communities, said Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, a professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. "Text messaging is a scalable and cost-efficient approach to delivering vaping cessation treatment on a population basis," the researchers wrote in the study.
The last wave analyzed took place during the COVID-19 pandemic in March to November 2021 and was administered via audio computer-assisted self-interviews and telephone interviews. They observed, on average, a 34 percent reduction in the femoral artery’s dilation. These findings suggest that vaping can cause significant changes to the inner lining of blood vessels, said study lead author Alessandra Caporale, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Structural, Physiologic, and Functional Imaging at Penn. In this study, the researchers examined the impact of an e-cigarette that contained propylene glycol and glycerol with tobacco flavoring, but no nicotine, which study participants took 16, three-second puffs from. To evaluate vascular reactivity, researchers constricted the vessels of the study participants’ thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood flowed after its release. Using a multi-parametric MRI procedure, researchers scanned the femoral artery and vein in the leg before and after each vaping episode to see how vascular function changed.
Take the edge off stress by trying ways to relax, such as deep breathing, muscle relaxation, yoga, visualization, massage or listening to calming music. Even short bursts of activity — such as running up and down the stairs a few times — can make a tobacco craving go away. You might be tempted to have just one cigarette to satisfy a tobacco craving. The best vape kit for beginners requires little to assemble and maintain - for example, a disposable device such as the Crystal Bar or Lost Mary or a pod device like the Riot Connex vape kit where the pods simply 'snap' on with magnets - it couldn't be easier! You can get closed pod mod systems, which use cartridges prefilled with e-liquid. This type of device is suitable for beginners as it eliminates the hassle of messy refills and fiddly coil changes.
The use of e-cigarettes has increased exponentially in recent years, and vaping has become preferred to traditional cigarette smoking among today’s young people and those looking for alternative to traditional tobacco and nicotine products. As use and availability of these products increases, reports have cast more light on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Here, Kenneth Uy, a health coach at Henry Ford Health, clarifies some information about these products and how their use can impact your health.
Once discarded into the environment, the filters create a large waste problem. Synthetic particulate filters may remove some of the tar before it reaches the smoker. The data underlying this article cannot be shared publicly due to the privacy of individuals that participated in the study.
A great example of this is the Riot Connex Pod Kit which uses magnets to attach replaceable cartridge-like flaovured pods to the batter. You can also get refillable pod mod kits, which use pods with built-in coils but require filling with your e-liquid. These can also appeal to beginners who like to experiment with different flavours but wish to keep the set-up as minimal as possible.
In this particular aspect, again the composition of the e-liquid varies significantly among different commercial brands [4, 35]. The most common and major components of e-liquids are PG or 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol or glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol). Both types of compounds are used as humectants to prevent the e-liquid from drying out [2, 53] and are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as "Generally Recognised as Safe" [54].
This mixture is typically made up of propylene glycol and/or glycerol (vegetable glycerin) and other chemicals. Flavouring ingredients include chemicals and blends of chemicals used to make different flavours. Disposable e-cigarettes are not covered by the flavor restrictions imposed by the Food and Drug Administration.
E-liquid physical properties are also important in carbonyl formation15,47,84,86. The viscosity and density of the e-liquid determine its mobility, capillary action, and delivery to the wick and coil, influencing the likelihood of a dry puff15. Sub-ohm vapes (sometimes called cloud kits) are more advanced vaping devices that are capable of outputting huge amounts of power; if you’ve ever noticed someone exhaling gigantic clouds from their kit, they were probably using one of these! Using a sub-ohm device requires a working knowledge of battery safety and Ohm’s Law, so it’s best to do some reading before investing in one. "India should be taking lessons from the West where vaping has become an epidemic. Claims that e-cigarettes aid cessation is a big lie, rather they are gateway devices.
Read this paper by NCI’s Dr. Ned Sharpless and CRUK’s Dr. Iain Foulkes. Drug forums and e-liquid vendors were monitored by the researchers for e-liquids that "purportedly contained alternative pharmaceuticals." A clue in searching for e-liquids that contain illicit drugs is cost, the scientists said. Most nicotine e-liquids range from $5 to $10, while alternative drug e-liquids go for five to twenty times as much. In comparison to the general population, support for these measures varied greatly among people who currently used e‑cigarettes. The most supported measure was prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age (67%), while the least supported measure was banning all additives in e‑cigarettes, to make them less attractive to young people (33%) (Figure 7).
Next, we examined the e-cigarette emissions of flavouring compounds, together with acetic acid and propionic acid, as listed by the U.S. These compounds were not analysed in cigarette smoke because the Ky1R6F cigarette used in the study is an unflavoured US-blended cigarette and validated analytical methods for these compounds were not available. From the studied carbonyls, only acetaldehyde, acrolein and formaldehyde are included in the nine WHO TobReg priority smoke toxicants55. Relative to cigarette smoke, their percentage of reduction in the e-cigarette emissions was ≥ 98.8%. Liquid refills are sold in quantities of 10 mL to more than 30 mL (about two to six teaspoons) in a variety of nicotine strengths. The products come in flavors with attractive scents and inviting packaging.
To date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. In contrast, nicotine replacement therapies (e.g., patch, gum, lozenge) and some prescription medications (i.e., varenicline, bupropion) have been evaluated by the FDA and found to be safe and effective at helping people quit smoking. Manufacturers and sellers of e-cigarettes aggressively target young people.
They usually contain nicotine, which is the addictive chemical in cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, which is the harmful part of cigarettes that causes cancer. By comparison, traditional cigarette sales have fallen by 5.2% since July 2023, while smokeless and oral nicotine products — led foremost by Zyn products — are up 11.8% as a category. Amid the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes and vapes among young people, health experts from PGIMER have raised concerns. They pointed out that many young people mistakenly think that e-cigarettes are "cool" because of their flavours, sleek designs, and social appeal. Experts warn that this misconception greatly increases the chances of non-smoking youth using regular cigarettes.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, acknowledging that vaping flavors can reduce the harms of traditional tobacco smoking. Some people believe e-cigarettes may help lower nicotine cravings in those who are trying to quit smoking. However, e-cigarettes are not an FDA-approved quit aid, and there is no conclusive scientific evidence on the effectiveness of vaping for long-term smoking cessation. It should be noted that there are seven FDA-approved quit aids that are proven safe and can be effective when used as directed.
These products use an "e-liquid" that usually contains nicotine derived from tobacco, as well as flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and other ingredients. The dangers of vaping include lung and other organ damage, breathing problems, addiction and more. People tend to think of vaping as "safer" than smoking, but it’s not safe. When the coronavirus pandemic first began, Blaha says, data show that e-cigarette sales went down, possibly because people were spending more time at home and avoiding stores and public areas. In light of the EVALI outbreak, the CDC advises people who use e-cigarettes for smoking cessation to weigh the risks and benefits and first consider use of other FDA-approved smoking cessation options. If you have thought about trying to kick a smoking habit, you’re not alone.
A recent study compared the acute effects of e-cigarette vapor (with PG/vegetable glycerine plus tobacco flavouring but without nicotine) generated from stainless‐steel atomizer (SS) heating element or from a nickel‐chromium alloy (NC) [92]. Neither the air‐exposed rats nor those exposed to e-cigarette vapor using SS heating elements developed respiratory distress. In contrast, 80% of the rats exposed to e-cigarette vapor using NC heating units developed clinical acute respiratory distress when a 70‐W power setting was employed. Thus, suggesting that operating units at higher than recommended settings can cause adverse effects. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the deleterious effects of battery output voltage are not comparable to those exerted by CS extracts [30] (Figs. 1 and 2). "Our findings are consistent with earlier evidence that sufficient nicotine replacement can be helpful for quitting smoking.
Most factory-made cigarettes are equipped with a filter; those who roll their own can buy them separately. Filters can reduce some substances from smoke but do not make cigarettes any safer to smoke. A recipe-specified combination of brightleaf, burley-leaf, and oriental-leaf tobacco is mixed with various additives to improve its flavors. Most commercially available cigarettes today contain tobacco that is treated with sugar to counter the harshness of the smoke. At the start of the 20th century, the per capita annual consumption in the U.S. was 54 cigarettes (with fewer than 0.5% of the population smoking more than 100 cigarettes per year), and consumption there peaked at 4,259 per capita in 1965. The authors wish to thank all adolescents and schools that participated in the SHP study in 2017, and the SHP study coordinators from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare who prepared the initial data and provided practical support with it.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that vaping nicotine can permanently affect brain development in people under the age of 25. The researchers concluded that vaping with and without nicotine disrupts typical lung function in otherwise healthy people. The researchers reported a number of adverse effects on both types of cells, including toxicity, oxidation, and inflammation. However, these results aren’t necessarily generalizable to vaping in real life. A 2019 study assessed data from a nationwide survey of nearly 450,000 participants and found no significant association between e-cigarette use and heart disease. The authors also described moderate evidence suggesting that taking a puff from an e-cigarette increases blood pressure.
Do we really know the composition of the inhaled vapour during the heating process and its impact on health? In the present review, we have attempted to clarify these questions based on the existing scientific literature, and we have compiled new insights related with the toxicity derived from the use of these devices. With the rise in fin electronic cigarette non rechargeable cigarettes (e-cigarette, e-cigs or vapes) and vaping use among youth, teens and young adults, the Health Department and our team are working to prevent initiation and reduce vaping of all substances in Vermont. As of 2021, 16% of Vermont high school students said they used e-cigarettes at least once in the past 30 days. Students who smoke cigarettes, tried flavored tobacco before age 13, binge drink or use cannabis vape at the highest rates.
In a major recent undertaking to help clarify the effects of e-cigarettes, the physician-investigator conducted a review of the best available evidence about vaping and lung harms. She and her co-authors published their roundup of the evidence in an article titled "Vaping and Lung Inflammation and Injury," which appeared online Feb. 10 in the journal Annual Review of Physiology. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015 found a connection too. Researchers surveyed 2,500 Los Angeles high school students who had never smoked.
Almost 9 in 10 people (86%) supported prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age, a substantial increase from 2019 (79%). Social and economic factors shape people’s behaviours of vaping or smoking. Generally, people living in the most disadvantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to currently smoke regular cigarettes but not use e‑cigarettes (13.2%). In contrast, people living in the most advantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to use e‑cigarettes but not smoke regular cigarettes (6.6%) (Figure 4). Young people aged 18 to 24 were the most likely to have used e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023, with almost 1 in 2 (49%) having used them at least once in their lifetime, and over 1 in 5 (21%) currently using e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023. More information on young people’s use of vapes and e-cigarettes can be found online.
Before this study — which Truth Initiative funded — there hasn’t been any data available on how to help teens quit vaping, according to the researchers. According to the study authors, prior research has already linked the nicotine in e-cigarette vapor to lung cancers in mice. "The amount of smoke the mice were exposed to was similar to a person who had vaped for about three to six years," they noted. "This study presents clear evidence showing that vaping in addition to smoking can increase your risk for lung cancer," said Bittoni, who works at the university's Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. One of the ingredients in tobacco is the mood-altering drug nicotine.
The program offers specially-trained coaches, real-time text or chat support, easy enrollment and youth-focused promotional and educational materials. The majority of cases reported to poison centers are due to accidental exposures in children less than 6 years old. This reflects the increasing availability of these products in the home due to use by guardians or older siblings. Additionally, in the last 5 years, the FDA has warned companies selling e-cigarette devices made in the shape of toys, foods or cartoons that specifically appeal to use by young people. Of this sample, 3,242 participants developed heart failure within a median follow-up time of 45 months. As e-cigarettes deliver flavorings, additives, and, typically, nicotine through an inhaled aerosol, they are harmful to both the user and those who are exposed secondhand.
CATCH My Breath’s curriculum attempts to empower students with this information for them to decide whether to pick up an e-cigarette, Marcella Bianco, the program’s director of government partnerships, explained. Once the school year starts, the 34 middle and high schools in the district join 56 others across the state that have already implemented the prevention program since its launch in 2017. The participants were encouraged to set a quit date and were asked about their vaping behavior via follow-up text message assessments. The trial participants were recruited via ads on social media, including Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. From October 2021 to October 2023, about half of the participants were randomly assigned to the This is Quitting text message program.
Researchers noted that they were unable to assess any association between e-cigarette nicotine formulation and cigarette cessation outcomes. Another potential limitation was that the study only included adult participants who reported smoking within the previous 30 days, limiting information about younger smokers and former smokers. In that same vein, 5.9 million people began vaping, bringing the total use of tobacco products among those 12 and older to 64.4 million.
Cigarette smoking is still the No. 1 cause of preventable death in this country, killing nearly five hundred thousand people each year. (According to some studies, more than half of longtime smokers will die from smoking-related complications.) It’s incredibly hard to stop smoking; people spend lifetimes trying. Around seventy per cent of American smokers say that they want to quit, and for many of them e-cigarettes have been a godsend. But, according to a 2017 study by the C.D.C., about fifty per cent more high schoolers and middle schoolers vape than smoke. Young people have taken a technology that was supposed to help grownups stop smoking and invented a new kind of bad habit, one that they have molded in their own image. The potential public-health benefit of the e-cigarette is being eclipsed by the unsettling prospect of a generation of children who may really love to vape.
Collectively, these devices are known as electronic cigarette pregnancy nicotine delivery systems. E-cigarette use is often referred to as "vaping" and the aerosol created from their use referred to as "vapor." E-cigarettes come in many colors, shapes, and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, highlighters, or toys. The liquid in e-cigarettes is sometimes called e-juice, e-liquid, vape juice, or vape liquid.
He encourages people committed to quitting to try non-inhaled methods such as the nicotine replacement patch or another FDA-approved smoking cessation product, as well as counseling. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that convert liquid into aerosol, which is inhaled into the user’s lungs. Typically, the liquid contains addictive nicotine, as well as flavors. More than 10 million adults in the United States use e-cigarettes, and vaping has become especially popular among teenagers.
