Separate studies have shown that newer e-cigarettes may deliver higher doses of nicotine more efficiently, which could explain the recent findings. The investigators acknowledged that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes. They noted that their study did not evaluate the risks of youth e-cigarette use. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used commercial tobacco product among youth,1 so it is critical that public health officials and the general public understand the potential risks of using them.
Njoy’s products accounted for less than 3% of U.S. e-cigarette sales in the past year, according to retail data from Nielsen. Vuse, owned by Reynolds American, and Juul control about 60% of the market, while hundreds of disposable brands account for the rest. The market share of disposable e-cigarette products increased from 52.0% to 57.8% between 2022 and 2023. Among disposable e-cigarette products, those with flavors other than tobacco accounted for 94.7% of the market in 2023. Although stopping smoking can cause short-term side effects such as reversible weight gain, smoking cessation services and activities are cost-effective because of the positive health benefits. Further, educational aspirations and school engagement are tied to student composition and school-based networks and norms, which have had different associations with smoking between schools [28].
During the Vietnam War, cigarettes were included with C-ration meals. In 1975, the U.S. government stopped putting cigarettes in military rations. In a major recent undertaking to help clarify the effects of e-cigarettes, the physician-investigator conducted a review of the best available evidence about vaping and lung harms. She and her co-authors published their roundup of the evidence in an article titled "Vaping and Lung Inflammation and Injury," which appeared online Feb. 10 in the journal Annual Review of Physiology. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015 found a connection too. Researchers surveyed 2,500 Los Angeles high school students who had never smoked.
A recent study compared the acute effects of e-cigarette vapor (with PG/vegetable glycerine plus tobacco flavouring but without nicotine) generated from stainless‐steel atomizer (SS) heating element or from a nickel‐chromium alloy (NC) [92]. Neither the air‐exposed rats nor those exposed to e-cigarette vapor using SS heating elements developed respiratory distress. In contrast, 80% of the rats exposed to e-cigarette vapor using NC heating units developed clinical acute respiratory distress when a 70‐W power setting was employed. Thus, suggesting that operating units at higher than recommended settings can cause adverse effects. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the deleterious effects of battery output voltage are not comparable to those exerted by CS extracts [30] (Figs. 1 and 2). "Our findings are consistent with earlier evidence that sufficient nicotine replacement can be helpful for quitting smoking.
He also highlighted the ban on e-cigarettes in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, aimed at preventing health risks and curbing their use among youth. People usually think vaping isn’t as bad as cigarette smoking, but the mist you breathe in still has nicotine and other harmful chemicals in it. Vaping isn’t safe and can cause health problems, including life-threatening lung injuries.
A priority of the New York State Tobacco Control Program is to prevent the initiation of tobacco use, including combustible tobacco and electronic cigarettes, by youth and young adults. The Program funds Reality Check, the youth engagement component for New York State teens, ages 13-18, to increase support for New York State's tobacco-free and vape-free norms through youth action and community engagement. Evidence-based, policy-driven, and cost-effective approaches are implemented to decrease youth tobacco use, protect youth from exposure to tobacco marketing and imagery, and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. Visit Reality Check for more information and to find your local Reality Check group. The good news is that quitting smoking can reduce many risk factors for the conditions and diseases below. For a long time, e-cigarettes and other electronic aerosolizers weren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They only came under the purview of the FDA in 2016, after they had been on the market for nearly a decade.
However, a single e-cigarette can be harmful to the body’s blood vessels — even when the vapor is entirely nicotine-free — according to a new study by researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Tobacco products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development as teens grow. Rural youth are at higher risk for harm, because they tend to begin using tobacco products at a younger age and use tobacco products more frequently. The authors of a 2019 review point out that e-liquid aerosols contain particulates, oxidizing agents, aldehydes, and nicotine. When inhaled, these aerosols most likely affect the heart and circulatory system. Of note, another study indicated that although RANTES/CCL5 and CCR1 mRNA were upregulated in flavour/nicotine-containing e-cigarette users, vaping flavour and nicotine-less e-cigarettes did not significantly dysregulate cytokine and inflammasome activation [43].

Importantly, the researchers found strong evidence of the program's effectiveness among key subgroups defined by race, ethnicity, gender, higher levels of nicotine dependence, smoking and other substance use, mental health challenges, and household dysfunction. "For many years, healthcare providers, teachers, and parents have been asking how to help teens quit vaping," said Dr. Amanda Graham, Chief Health Officer at Truth Initiative and principal investigator of the study.
Rates of e-cigarette use among Cumberland students aren’t available, but across North Carolina, 21.4% of high school respondents to the state’s 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey said they currently vaped. The state’s rates are significantly higher than the national rates of 10% for high schoolers and 4.6% of middle schoolers, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey. The combo could raise your odds for lung cancer even higher, new research warns. But now that I’ve gotten rid of the endless, all-day vaping, and a nicotine hit makes me stink like a dive bar ashtray, makes my mouth taste like dirt, and makes my friends recoil from my presence, I’ve got reasons to cut back.
In December 2019, Congress raised the minimum age to buy tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 18 to 21. Because of the popularity of certain flavored e-cigarette products among children, FDA stated in January 2020 that it would prioritize enforcement actions against the manufacture and sale of most flavors in cartridge-based e-cigarettes. In April 2020, FDA extended from May to September 2020 the deadline for manufacturers to apply for premarket authorization, a process that includes the scientific evaluation of risks and benefits of e-cigarettes for the U.S. population. NCI supports research to understand the potential impact of ENDS use on both individual and population health, as it relates to cancer control and prevention.

There are currently more than 7,000 varieties of flavored e-cigarettes and e-juice (liquid containing nicotine that is used in refillable devices) on the market. Although the popularity and use of e-cigarettes continues to increase, there is a lack of data on their potential health effects. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a proposed rule to include e-cigarettes under its authority to regulate certain tobacco and nicotine-containing products. Fourth-generation ‘pod’ e-cigarette devices have been driven by technological advances in electronic atomization of the e-liquid.
With millions of teens and young adults using e-cigarettes, a new generation could become addicted to nicotine and face other health risks. For some adult smokers, e-cigarettes may offer a less harmful substitute for traditional cigarettes. However, long-term effects on users, second-hand exposure, and environmental effects are not yet fully known. The e-liquid typically contains humectants and flavourings, with or without nicotine; once vapourised by the atomiser, the aerosol (vapour) provides a sensation similar to tobacco smoking, but purportedly without harmful effects [3].
The main danger with a closed-system vape comes from the lithium-ion battery. If you try to charge it using an incompatible device, there's a small but real chance of a fire or explosion. If you're new to vaping, we'd suggest starting out with a disposable vape pen. Because these devices are pre-assembled and standardized, there's no need to worry about making a dangerous mistake with the power supply that causes overheating. There's no e-liquid at all in this device, just natural, food-grade flavor extracts. And third-party testing has confirmed that the E-Z contains no allergens, carcinogens, or toxins of any kind.
Despite this trend all current evidence finds that e-cigarettes carry a fraction of the risk of smoking. The 966 respondents who had never vaped more often believed that e-cigarette waste was dangerous to throw in trash compared to the 1,083 respondents who had vaped at least once (81.4% vs. 71%). Fewer of those who had vaped at least once (79.3%) believed that e-cigarettes contained toxic substances compared to those who had never vaped (89.6%). Young respondents clearly recognized the dangers of e-cigarette waste to humans and the environment and want an appropriate method to recycle.

But this added flexibility means more possibilities for health hazards. You'll have to be careful not to buy knock-off vape liquids with unhealthy contaminants, for one thing.
However, no rigorous scientific studies have shown that they are safe for use. Some people who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. But switching to e-cigarettes still exposes users to potentially serious ongoing health risks. It’s important to stop using all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, as soon as possible both to reduce health risks and to avoid staying addicted to nicotine.
Advertisements for vapes are also restricted in youth-centered areas like parks. Meanwhile, California was the least popular state for youth vaping, as just six percent of teens had picked up the habit. Louisiana and Montana tied to round out the top five, both with a quarter of teens using e-cigarettes.

Tobacco products contain unsafe substances, from acetone and tar to nicotine and carbon monoxide. The inhaled substances can affect your lungs and the other organs in your body.
They are not recommended for non-smokers and cannot be sold to people under 18 years old. In recent years, e-cigarettes have become a very popular stop smoking aid in the UK. Passengers are required to take effective measures for preventing accidental activation of the heating element of the device when transporting the devices. See the FAA regulations for examples of effective measures. Each lithium ion battery must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh; or for lithium metal batteries, a lithium content of 2 grams.
But with its plant-derived, additive-free formula and rigorous testing, this device from Tribe Tokes is one of the safest vape products for CBD lovers. Youth ENDS use raises concerns about nicotine addiction, negative effects of nicotine on adolescent brain development, and other potential health harms, including increased risk of initiating cigarette smoking. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also called electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaping devices, or vape pens, are battery-powered devices used to smoke or "vape" a flavored or unflavored solution which usually contains nicotine. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recognizes the increased use of ENDS, especially among youth and young adults, as well as its use by those attempting to quit smoking tobacco. Although e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, for regulatory purposes, they are considered "tobacco products" by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Similarly, a 2014 review reported that vaping may trigger gum, mouth, and throat irritation. In particular, a 2015 study examined the effects of flavored e-juices on both human lung cells and lung cells in mice. Here’s what we currently know about the effects of vaping fluids with and without nicotine and vaping cannabis or CBD. In cultured human airway epithelial cells, both e-cigarette aerosol and CS extract induced IL-8/CXCL8 (neutrophil chemoattractant) release [28]. Researchers noted that study participants using both types of cigarettes had a higher nicotine dependence in relation to e-cigarettes. Find more resources on tobacco, e-cigarettes, and vaping on the SAMHSA Store.
What may be the most important message of all is that e-cigarettes and vaping come with many health unknowns, Dr. O’Connor adds. "You see plumes of what looks like steam coming out of people’s mouths on the street when they are vaping, and I think they assume it’s mostly safe, mostly water. But these liquids used in vaping are filled with all kinds of stuff [like nicotine, marijuana, flavoring agents, chemicals], and we don’t always know what else is in there," he says. When potentially risky behaviors experience an uptick in popularity, health researchers are never far behind—gathering data.
Fetal exposure to e-cigarettes can adversely affect the development of the fetus in pregnant women. Exposure to emissions from e-cigarettes also poses risks to bystanders. E-cigarettes may help nonpregnant adults quit smoking cigarettes if they are used as a complete substitute for all smoked tobacco products. However, e-cigarettes are not currently approved by the FDA to help people quit smoking. If you are using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, it is important to make a plan to quit vaping.
Several states have imposed restrictions on the sale of e-cigarettes. There are also restrictions on liquids with flavors that may be more attractive to younger people. The researchers also noted a lack of evidence that vaping is an effective means of quitting smoking. The marketing of e-cigarettes and their range of flavors can give the impression that vaping is not harmful.
E-cigarettes have become the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. and Iowa youth, and their popularity has risen dramatically over the past several years. According to the Iowa Youth Survey (IYS), Iowa 11th-graders were far more likely to use e-cigarettes compared to traditional cigarettes. They also reported increased likelihood in trying e-cigarettes and decreased quit success when compared to cigarettes.
Their actions should come as no surprise as e-cigarette manufacturers fail to provide consumers with guidance or take responsibility for appropriate disposal methods. In a separate study conducted by Truth Initiative in 2019, almost half (46.9%) of e-cigarette device owners said that the e-cigarette device they used currently did not provide any disposal information, such as where to send used batteries or empty pods. Additionally, when e-cigarette device owners were asked about e-cigarette waste disposal, the majority (73.7%) believed that it was difficult to find e-cigarette drop off sites. Principal investigator Wendy Max, PhD, director of the Institute for Health & Aging, noted that from 2013 to 2018, e-cigarette use among high school students soared from 4.5% to 20.8%. The Australian Government’s new Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) legislation commences from April 2024 and incorporates new controls governing the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes (Department of Health and Aged Care 2024). According to the National Tobacco Strategy 2023–2030 (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023b), strengthening regulations on e‑cigarettes has been listed as a priority area, and actions such as prohibiting the sale of flavoured e‑cigarettes have been proposed.
With so many adults kicking the cigarette smoking habit, Altria was looking for ways to sustain its financial stability. Outside of addiction, nicotine can also have other long-term and permanent effects on developing brains. The nicotine in e-liquids is readily absorbed from the lungs into the bloodstream when a person vapes an e-cigarette.
Researchers noted that they were unable to assess any association between e-cigarette nicotine formulation and cigarette cessation outcomes. Another potential limitation was that the study only included adult participants who reported smoking within the previous 30 days, limiting information about younger smokers and former smokers. In that same vein, 5.9 million people began vaping, bringing the total use of tobacco products among those 12 and older to 64.4 million.
E-cigarettes aren't thought of as 100% safe, but most experts think they're less dangerous than cigarettes, says Neal Benowitz, MD, a nicotine researcher at the University of California at San Francisco. Cigarette smoking kills almost half a million people a year in the United States. Most of the harm comes from the thousands of chemicals that are burned and inhaled in the smoke, he explains. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that can look like a real cigarette or pen.
According to the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million teens reported vaping nicotine, and there was an increase in current overall tobacco product use among middle school students (4.5% to 6.6%) and multiple tobacco product use (1.5% to 2.5%). They are not technically categorized as smokeless tobacco, so the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate them as strictly as smoked tobacco products or combustible tobacco. Without long-term data, we cannot be certain if or how reduced exposure will prevent harm to one’s health. In Canada, most of the provinces require smokers to be 19 years of age to purchase cigarettes (except for Quebec and the prairie provinces, where the age is 18). However, the minimum age only concerns the purchase of tobacco, not use. Alberta, however, does have a law which prohibits the possession or use of tobacco products by all persons under 18, punishable by a $100 fine.
Nonetheless, adults who smoke who switch to using e-cigarettes expose themselves to potentially serious ongoing health risks. If they are unable to quit e-cigarettes on their own, they should seek help from a health care professional or quitline. Individuals who are not yet able to stop using e-cigarettes should be strongly discouraged from simultaneous, or "dual," use of any combustible tobacco products, including cigarettes. Continuing to smoke exposes the individual to enormous harms, irrespective of whether the individual is using e-cigarettes part of the time. All individuals should also be strongly counseled to not revert to smoking. Some look like a regular cigarette, but many resemble everyday products like pens, USB drives, highlighting markers, or colorful toy-like items.

Researchers are working hard to learn as much as possible about the illness, its causes, and the odds for making a full recovery. "We recommend that patients see a pulmonologist within one to two weeks after being discharged to undergo testing of lung function and pulse oximetry [level of oxygen in the blood]," she says.
On this webpage, these products are collectively referred to as e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals that make the aerosols. The liquid is sometimes called e-juice, e-liquid, vape juice, or vape liquid. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales it into the air. E-cigarette devices can be used to deliver marijuana and other drugs. Additionally, a study of adult smokers in Europe found those who vaped nicotine were less like to have stopped smoking than those who did not.
We also left out propylene glycol, a petroleum byproduct often used as a flavor enhancer. I understand that for a few moments during your meal you may have a sniff of my vape that you don’t care for, but I’m sure that it isn’t as horrible as you make it sound in your rant. Life is full of mild unpleasantries that we all must deal with on a daily basis, but we can choose to deal with them or let them torment us.
E-cigarettes consist of a mouthpiece, an e-liquid chamber, an atomiser and a battery. The atomiser has a wicking material that draws the e-liquid onto a battery-powered heating coil. Optimal vapour production depends on an efficient supply of e-liquid to the heating coil, which is limited by the wicking and rate of e-liquid evaporation10,11,12. Power levels that produce aerosol beyond the ability of the wick to resupply the liquid to the coil may result in overheating of the atomizer coil and consequently overheating of the e-liquid10,11. Different types of wicking material, varying in size and shape, have been used in e-cigarettes3,13.
The liquid and vapour contain some potentially harmful chemicals also found in cigarette smoke, but at a much lower level. Find out more about e-cigarettes, e-liquids and vaping to quit smoking on the Better Health website. In many e-cigarettes, puffing activates the battery-powered heating device, which vaporizes the liquid in the cartridge. The person then inhales the resulting aerosol or vapor (called vaping).
Using e-cigarettes, or "vaping," are terms used synonymously to refer to the use of a wide variety of electronic, battery-operated devices that aerosolize, but do not burn, liquids to release nicotine and other substances. Nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are regulated as "tobacco products" by the FDA because the nicotine is derived from the tobacco plant. E-cigarettes pose a threat to the health of users and the harms are becoming increasingly apparent. In the past few years, the use of these products has increased at an alarming rate among young people in significant part because the newest, re-engineered generation of e-cigarettes more effectively delivers large amounts of nicotine to the brain.
The flavored vape juice inside contains only vegetable glycerine and organic fruit extracts. That means it's free from all the harmful chemicals we mentioned above. It's a stripped-down, vegan-friendly, nicotine-free vaping experience. When I smoked cigarettes, I dealt with inconveniences due to my addiction. I would be forced to leave the company of my friends and family to go stand outdoors, like an outcast or lesser human, so that I could prevent myself from having a withdrawal meltdown.
Taken together, the studies provide strong evidence that an interactive, tailored text message program can help teens and their older peers break free from nicotine addiction. These findings are especially important given the recent youth mental health crisis documented by the U.S. Adolescents in this study were characterized by high severity of past-year problems with depression, sleep, anxiety, trauma, and substance use. In addition, moderate to high levels of nicotine dependence were observed across multiple measures, with more than three-quarters (76.2%) of teens vaping within 30 minutes of waking — a common way to measure addiction. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health brings together dedicated experts from many disciplines to educate new generations of global health leaders and produce powerful ideas that improve the lives and health of people everywhere. Each year, more than 400 faculty members at Harvard Chan School teach 1,000-plus full-time students from around the world and train thousands more through online and executive education courses.
E-cigarettes can be used to smoke or "vape" marijuana products, herbs, waxes and oils. In the US, e-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among middle- and high-school students. In 2023, 2.1 million students (10% of high-school students and 4.6% of middle-school students) reported current e-cigarette use.
Enter e-cigarettes, which were new, high-tech, and came with no proven health risks. There were no long-term studies yet, but common sense dictated that if you wanted to quit inhaling tobacco through smoking, the least you could do was switch to e-cigarettes. She added that there is also an "absence of studies" on the effects and dosage of nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, for adolescents as a way to help them quit vaping. Nicotine replacement therapy is the family of medications used to help adults quit using nicotine, including over-the-counter patches, gums or lozenges or prescription inhalers or nasal sprays. California has some of the strictest regulations in the US, including a ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products to residents of any age.
Such policies are critical in the absence of strong federal regulation of e-cigarettes. As of March 31, 2023, seven states and an estimated 388 counties, cities, towns, and tribes have restricted the sale of flavored tobacco products. However, this leaves a large majority of the U.S. population not covered by such restrictions. E-cigarette sales have rapidly escalated in the relatively short history of the products. Overall e-cigarette sales, as well as the total number of e-cigarette brands, increased by more than 46% between January 2020 and December 2022. Disposable e-cigarettes have nearly tripled in nicotine strength, quintupled in e-liquid capacity, and dropped in price by nearly 70% between 2017 and 2022.
Some public health experts believe that e-cigarettes are an essential alternative to smoking tobacco that can help smokers quit. Others argue that e-cigarettes could be a route into nicotine addiction and point out that their long-term safety has not yet been proven. There are also those that believe that e-cigarettes may offer public health benefits but that e-cigarettes should be regulated, particularly when it comes to the marketing of such products.

A May analysis found that vaping increases the risk of asthma by 200 percent and previous studies have linked the products to lung cancer, respiratory conditions, lung disease and organ damage. It’s still not clear how the toxins found in vaping can affect the health of non-vapers, especially long-term. The limited research available so far has largely focused on immediate health effects.
The tobacco industry profits from destroying health and is using these newer products to get a seat at the policy making table with governments to lobby against health policies. WHO is concerned that the tobacco industry funds and promotes false evidence to argue that these products reduce harm, while at the same time heavily promoting these products to children and non-smokers and continuing to sell billions of cigarettes. Nicotine affects the development of the brain’s reward system and brain circuits that control attention and learning. Continued use of nicotine can lead to addiction and raise the risk for addiction to other drugs. In a recent study, about 18% of people who switched to vaping had been able to quit smoking.

Poisoning from nicotine and e-cigarette liquid can occur by drinking it, spilling it on the skin, and breathing too much vapor. Cases of accidental eye exposure have also been reported as refill bottles are similar to commercially available eye dropper bottles used for therapeutic eye drops. Prohibiting e-cigarette use inside or near buildings, vehicles and other enclosed spaces is the only way to eliminate exposure to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol and health risks that may come with it. Other electronic vapor products that use e-liquids include e-cigars, e-pipes, and hookah pens (e-hookah).

Some e-cigarette brands contain nicotine salts to mask the harshness of nicotine and make it more palatable. As of 2018, all tobacco products must bear the required nicotine addictiveness warning statement on product packages and advertisements in order to warn consumers about the presence of and addictive nature of nicotine.
Consequently, stricter regulation and a higher quality control in the e-liquid industry are required. The mislabelling of nicotine content in e-liquids has been previously addressed [8, 34]. Of note, several studies have detected nicotine in those e-liquids labelled as nicotine-free [5, 35, 36]. Among the 17 samples tested in this latter study 14 were identified to be counterfeit or suspected counterfeit. A third study detected nicotine in 7 of 10 nicotine-free refills, although the concentrations were lower than those identified in the previous analyses (0.1–15 µg/mL) [5].

The eBook is optimized for e-reader devices and apps, which means that it offers a much better digital reading experience than a PDF, including resizable text and interactive features (when available).
In many high and middle income countries lower socioeconomic status is a strong predictor of smoking. In North America, the common name for the remains of a cigarette after smoking is a cigarette butt. In Britain, it is also called a fag-end or a dog-end.[44] The butt is typically about 30% of the cigarette's original length. It consists of a tissue tube which holds a filter and some remains of tobacco mixed with ash. According to data from the World Health Organization,[39] the amount of tobacco per 1000 cigarettes fell from 1.03 kg (2.28 pounds) in 1960 to 0.41 kg (0.91 pounds) in 1999, largely as a result of reconstituting tobacco, fluffing, and additives. The epidemic use of e-cigarettes is a complicated problem which requires a cooperative effort between partners, organizations, and communities.
Replacing your cigarette with a cigar, pipe, e-cigarette, or hookah won’t help you avoid the health risks. The U.S. government has taken steps to restrict most flavored vaping products, effective in 2020. While this should reduce the number of flavored cartridges available in the United States, the guidelines are limited to products submitted for market authorization and don’t include those made at home or purchased online from other countries. Other studies suggest that while using e-cigarettes sends pollutants into the air, the concentration of these toxins drops quickly after someone stops vaping (much faster than cigarette smoke), but that doesn’t mean that the risk has gone away. Some, for example, will settle on surfaces, such as carpets or furniture, where small children might touch them or inadvertently ingest them when placing contaminated objects in their mouths.
Although e-cigarettes do not give off smoke like tobacco cigarettes, they do expose people to secondhand aerosol or "vapor" that may contain harmful substances. Scientists are still learning about the health effects of being exposed to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol. The FDA monitors the national usage rates for all tobacco products, including an annual youth survey, and has seen a drastic increase in youth use of e-cigarette products in recent years.
That figure is controversial and might be a little high, says Kenneth Warner, a tobacco policy researcher at the University of Michigan. But, he adds, "The worst critics of e-cigarettes would probably argue they're a half to two-thirds less dangerous. But from a practical view, they're probably on the order of 80% to 85% less dangerous, at least." A 2015 expert review from Public Health England estimated e-cigs are 95% less harmful than the real thing.
Without immediate measures to stop epidemic use of these products, the long-term adverse health effects will increase. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults.

In fact, the overall evidence points to e-cigarettes actually helping people to give up smoking tobacco. There is no evidence that e-cigarettes are undermining England’s falling smoking rates. Instead the evidence consistently finds that e-cigarettes are another tool for stopping smoking and in my view smokers should try vaping and vapers should stop smoking entirely. E-cigarettes not only pose substantial health risks to youth and young adults, they pose a significant environmental threat (see the Truth Initiative fact sheet on Tobacco and the Environment). Almost half (49.1%) of young people don’t know what to do with used e-cigarette pods and disposable devices. A second brand of e-cigarettes—marketed as Nixotine, Nixodine, Nixamide and Nic-Safe—contained a nicotine analog called nicotinamide, also at levels lower than the labels indicated, and combined with undisclosed amounts of 6-methyl nicotine.
